South Carolina got its first commitment for the class of 2023 Thursday when Sahnya Jah announced her decision on Instagram.

Jah is a 6-1 wing who attends Montverde Academy in Florida. She is ranked 45th in the class by HoopGurlz. Jah played for Bishop McNamara in Forestville, MD, before transferring to Montverde for her senior season.

Jah visited South Carolina the weekend of October 8. She also visited Florida, Miami, and Georgia in the preceding weeks.

Jah is a strong, athletic wing who is similar to Brea Beal in size and ability. She is a good defender who excels at doing the little things.

Dawn Staley teased Jah’s commitment on Thursday, and about an hour later Jah posted a countdown timer on her Instagram.

South Carolina has between four and nine open scholarships for next year, depending on who among the seniors decides to use a covid year. Laeticia Amihere, Brea Beal, Aliyah Boston, Zia Cooke, and Olivia Thompson are seniors who have the option of returning for next season.

Staley does not like to carry a full roster because it is hard to keep everyone happy, plus it is prudent to have a couple of available scholarships for the transfer portal. That suggests South Carolina will likely sign two or three more players.

The four most likely remaining candidates are Aalyah Del Rosario, Malaysia Fulwiley, Chloe Kitts, and Tessa Johnson.
