South Carolina’s 3×3 went undefeated in pool play but lost in the semifinals and finished in third place at the 2025 USA Basketball 3X Nationals this weekend in Mesa, Arizona.

Joyce Edwards, Chloe Kitts, Tessa Johnson, and Maddy McDaniel represented South Carolina at the event. Gamecock assistant coach Khadijah Sessions was their coach, although coaches are not allowed to communicate with players during games.

3×3 is played on a half court with a 10-minute clock and a 12-second shot clock. The first team to 21 points, or the team in the lead at the end of regulation, is the winner.

In pool play, South Carolina beat Phoenix 21-13 on Friday, and then won both games on Saturday, 21-5 over South Dakota State and 16-11 over James Madison.

South Carolina cruised in its quarterfinal game, beating Oklahoma State 21-9. But eventually champion Team Chaos, led by former Gamecock MiLaysia Fulwiley, ended South Carolina’s run with a 21-10 defeat in the semifinals.

South Carolina was awarded third place based on total points scored. Individual stats were not kept.

The women’s tournament featured 16 teams, including Florida, Oklahoma State, South Dakota State, TCU, and Vanderbilt. 3X Nationals served as an evaluation for selection to various future USA Basketball 3×3 men’s and women’s national teams, including the 2025 FIBA 3×3 World Cup.

South Carolina is developing a strong relationship with 3×3 basketball.

Former Gamecock Allisha Gray helped lead the USA to the first-ever 3×3 gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Last fall, Sania Feagin led Team USA to a gold medal at the 3×3 World Cup, and that experience was a springboard to her breakout senior season.

This was the first 3×3 experience for all four players.

Edwards won a gold medal with the 2023 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup team and was a member of the 2024 Women’s U18 National Team. Kitts won gold medals at the 2022 FIBA Women’s U18 Americas Championship and the 2023 FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup.

McDaniel has attended USA Basketball training camps in 2023 and 2024. This was Johnson’s first USA Basketball appearance.
