Four Games I Can’t Wait to Watch
South Carolina vs Texas (times two), January 12 and February 9
Welcome to the SEC, Texas. Welcome back, Coach Vic Schaefer. Texas figures to join South Carolina on the short list of Final Four contenders and should be the top challenger to end South Carolina’s run of three consecutive SEC titles.
Oklahoma at South Carolina, January 19
A lot of this is the newness, but there is also a lot to like in this game. The Sooners are quietly the two-time defending Big 12 Champions, they play a unique fast-paced style, and they added top transfer Raegan Beers, who gave the Gamecocks trouble in the Elite Eight with Oregon State.
LSU at South Carolina, January 23
This game marks the end of a two-week span that could decide the SEC champion. The arrival of Texas and old nemesis Schaefer have stolen some of the spotlight from the budding South Carolina-LSU rivalry, but I don’t expect this game to be any less intense. They are the last three national champions but the Tigers have been unable to solve the Gamecocks. This will also be the first time they’ve played since the benches-clearing fight at the SEC Tournament.

Three Best non-USC Games
LSU at Texas, February 16
South Carolina hosts UConn on the same day, making for must-see-tv on the first Sunday after the Super Bowl. Both have Final Four hopes, but this game could knock one of these teams out of contention for the SEC regular season title. Vic Schaefer and Kim Mulkey are also distant branches of the Gary Blair coaching tree
Tennessee at Vanderbilt, January 19
It’s probably been 30 years since Vanderbilt entered a season with equal – if not higher – expectations than Tennessee. Now the Commodores have to prove they can build off of Shea Ralph’s promising second season. I’m not sure anyone knows what to expect from the Lady Vols this season. Kim Caldwell has just one season of Division I coaching experience, and that came at Marshall. Lose to Vandy and the natives might get restless in a hurry.
LSU at Kentucky, February 23
It’s a new era for Kentucky women’s basketball, and the Wildcats have a shiny new coach and a shiny new arena. They lured Kenny Brooks away from Virginia Tech, where he led the Hokies to the 2023 Final Four, and have completed year-long renovations to Memorial Coliseum that forced the Wildcats to be nomads last season. LSU, the team that beat Virginia Tech in the Final Four. , will put that new optimism to the test.
