South Carolina women’s basketball center Sakima Walker will enter the transfer portal, per On3’s Talia Goodman. She enters with a “do not contact” tag and could be a fit at Grand Canyon with new head coach and former USC assistant Winston Gandy.

The 6-5 post player spent two years in Columbia. During her first year in garnet and black, Walker played in 31 games and averaged two points and 1.3 rebounds. This year, though, she played in just 15 games as she battled some lower leg injuries. She was best known for being a great teammate and “Mama ‘Kima” to younger players on the roster.

Walker is the first player to reveal plans to transfer from the South Carolina women’s basketball program this offseason. She will have one more year of eligibility remaining at her next stop.

Gamecock head coach Dawn Staley has teased that she plans to utilize the transfer portal more this offseason than in years past. Specifically, she has stated USC would like to add a big-bodied post player and some “experienced pieces that can help with this young group.”

The Gamecocks added some experience on Tuesday when former Florida State guard Ta’Niya Latson committed to the program. South Carolina could soon be getting some good news in its pursuit of a big post piece, too.

With Walker’s departure and Latson’s commitment, South Carolina would have at least four available scholarship spots they could use in the portal. Te-Hina Paopao, Bree Hall, and Sanie Feagin have exhausted their eligibility. Any further portal activity would change that number.
