South Carolina women's basketball will not play UConn in the regular season for the first time in over a decade

South Carolina women’s basketball has played against the UConn Huskies in the regular season every year for over a decade. However, that streak will end this season. CTInsider’s Maggie Vanoni and Carl Adamec reported on Friday that the long-standing out-of-conference rivalry will not happen during the 2025-2026 campaign, barring a postseason matchup.
The report shouldn’t come as a surprise to GamecockCentral subscribers. GamecockCentral’s Chris Wellbaum has reported on numerous occasions (including earlier this week) that this was the expected outcome. The contract between USC and UConn ended in 2024, meaning that the 2024-2025 matchup was going to going to be the last installment of the yearly contest unless something unexpected happened. Many previous matchups came in the middle of conference play, an inconvenience that cost the teams a bye each time.
Currently, Connecticut is on a two-game winning streak in the series, including the 2024-2025 NCAA Tournament National Championship Game. Before that, the Gamecocks had won four in a row and five of six against the Huskies. During that stretch, South Carolina won the 2021-2022 title game over UConn.

South Carolina was not last season’s NCAA Tournament No. 1 overall seed, despite owning the best resume. Because of that, head coach Dawn Staley publicly lamented her tough scheduling practices and hinted that changes could be coming. Nonetheless, the Gamecocks remain on pace to play a tough slate of games before SEC play begins.
Though Staley’s team has dropped the UConn game, the group’s non-conference schedule remains among the best in the country. South Carolina will host Providence and Clemson, will travel to Louisville (as part of the ACC/SEC Challenge), South Florida, and Southern Cal, and will play neutral-site games against UCLA, Duke, and Texas (yes, it will be a non-con contest) at the Players Era Championship in Las Vegas.
