Sania Feagin was one of the last players to make the Los Angeles Sparks’ roster, and the team released a charming video of Feagin finding out she made the team.

Feagin was the Sparks’ second-round pick, and second-round picks don’t always make the team. She learned the good news in a meeting with general manager Raegan Pebley and coach Lynne Roberts.

“It’s really hard for second-round picks, third-round picks to make this team,” Pebley said, followed by a dramatic pause. “But we want you to know you made it!”

“Thank you,” Feagin said. “I was in the car crying. I said Raegan texted me, oh my gosh.”

Feagin called her mother to share the news. “I made the team,” she said. Her mom replied, “Thank you, Jesus!”

“My heart was in my back,” Feagin said.

Next, Feagin called Dawn Staley. Staley jokingly suggested she wasn’t impressed. “I knew you were going to make the damn team. I knew it. Congratulations.” Then Staley asked Pebley, “She did good?”

“She did so good,” Pebley said. “We told her, Coach Staley, she made this team because she had great practice habits. She knew how to talk, she knew how to compete, she knew how to listen and apply.”

“I’m not surprised,” Staley said.

Feagin is one of nine former Gamecocks on opening day WNBA rosters, and one of two rookies. Te-Hina Paopao mad ehte Atlanta Dream roster.

The other seven players are Tiffany Mitchell (Las Vegas), Allisha Gray (Atlanta), A’ja Wilson (Las Vegas), Tyasha Harris (Dallas), Aliyah Boston (Indiana), Zia Cooke (Seattle), and Kamilla Cardoso (Chicago).

Putting nine players on opening day rosters is one short of the program record of ten set last season. Eventually, 12 former Gamecocks appeared in WNBA games last season.

Three former Gamecocks were waived during training camp. Mikiah Herbert Harrigan was waived by Dallas on May 4. Indiana waived Bree Hall on May 5. Despite an impressive preseason, including a 20-point game, Laeticia Amihere was part of Golden State’s last round of cuts on May 14.

The WNBA season begins May 16.
