A possible statue for Aliyah Boston has been a hot topic recently, but it turns out Dawn Staley is the one getting a statue.
Columbia mayor Daniel Rickenmann confirmed to The State Wednesday that a statue of Staley will be installed at the corner of Main and Gervais Streets, across from the State House. The statue will be created in cooperation with Statues for Equality.
Statues for Equality is a public art project with the goal of increasing the representation of women and minorities in public art. The goal is to empower and inspire girls with images of success.

Other installations by Statues for Equality include Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsberg and Sonia Sotomayor, Oprah Winfrey, Eleanor Roosevelt, and South Carolina native Mary McLeod Bethune.
Local businesses will provide half of the funding for the statue, while Statues for Equality provides 50/50 matching funds. No funding comes from the university or taxpayers.
The design for the statue has not been selected, and Staley will have the right to approve the final design. Once the design is approved, it will be 10-12 months before installation.
While we wait for the design to be announced, we have a few suggestions.
