South Carolina women's basketball to lose key assistant coach

South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley has asserted multiple times this season that assistant coach Winston Gandy was head coach material. Coach Staley’s assessment proved to be correct as, according to reports from On3’s Talia Goodman, Gandy will be the next head coach at Grand Canyon University.
Grand Canyon coach Molly Miller left over the weekend to become the head coach at Arizona State. Following her departure, GCU zeroed in on Gandy quickly. He is expected to remain with South Carolina throughout the team’s NCAA Tournament run.

During his time in Columbia, Winston Gandy was a pivotal part of the Gamecocks’ scouting and game-planning efforts. Coach Staley praised Gandy’s work in slowing Caitlin Clark in last year’s National Championship Game and for the adjustments that South Carolina made to defeat the Texas Longhorns in the SEC Tournament Championship Game this season. He also worked with the team’s guards the past two seasons.
Before his time with USC, Gandy was the associate head coach at Duke and previously worked on the coaching staffs at Rice, Maryland, and the NBA’s Washington Wizards.
