Spencer Rattler becomes first South Carolina QB drafted in over 30 years
For the first time since 1990, a South Carolina quarterback has been selected in the NFL Draft. On Day 3, the New Orleans Saints drafted Spencer Rattler with the 150th overall pick in the fifth round.
In two years at South Carolina, Rattler put together two of the best statistical seasons by a Gamecock quarterback. Compiling 6,212 yards passing, he completed 549-of-798 passes and threw 37 touchdowns. He also added seven rushing touchdowns. Working with former NFL offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains this pass season, Rattler threw for 3,186 yards, which ranks as the third most in a season in South Carolina history.

Following a strong senior season, Rattler continued to see his draft stock skyrocket. Named the MVP of the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl, the QB went a perfect 4-for-4 through the air for 65 yards and threw for a touchdown. He was also named the MVP, by his defensive peers, for his performance in practice at the Senior Bowl.
Considered the consensus No.1 rated quarterback for the class of 2019, prior to coming to South Carolina ahead of the 2022 season, Rattler spent his first two years playing at Oklahoma. During his draft process, Rattler made a point to share how grateful he was for the lessons he learned from a now NFL quarterback.

“I was blessed to be behind Jalen Hurts at Oklahoma and seeing how he handled himself in the building, out of the building, with media, (just) everything. He did it the right way and that helped me out a lot. Then going to South Carolina (as a) grown man and just growing, and growing, and growing. It helped me out a lot over the years.”
