Spencer Rattler reveals what advice he'd give to his 17-year-old self
South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler is one of two Gamecocks taking part in this week’s Senior Bowl in Mobile, AL.
While the week will allow Rattler the opportunity to raise his draft stock with his play on the field, he’ll also have a chance to show his maturity to NFL scouts and coaches. That’s already been evident in a recent interview he did with the NFL Network where Rattler was asked what advice would he give his 17-year-old self.

“I would definitely tell a 17-year-old me to stay as humble as you possibly can,” said Rattler. “Because when you have a lot of success at a young age, I’ve been through it, you think you’re hot stuff. Then you realize you gotta restart in college and then obviously at the next level you have to restart all over again. Just remaining humble. I’ve always been a humble person but really being exact with that and precise and just carrying yourself in a certain manner.”
Despite his time at Oklahoma not going exactly as he envisioned, Rattler made a point to share how grateful he was for the lessons he learned from a now NFL quarterback.

“I was blessed to be behind Jalen Hurts at Oklahoma and seeing how he handled himself in the building, out of the building, with media, (just) everything. He did it the right way and that helped me out a lot. Then going to South Carolina (as a) grown man and just growing, and growing, and growing. It helped me out a lot over the years.”

When Rattler arrived at South Carolina for the spring semester of 2022, his portrayal in the 2019 Netflix documentary QB1: Beyond the Lights painted a completely different picture of what his Gamecock teammates and coaches thought of him during his two seasons with the program. A documentary that was recorded when Rattler was just 17 years old.

“He’s a great dude but there’s this perception about him that he’s not a good person,” said former South Carolina tight end Trey Knox this past season. “He’s one of the best people I’ve ever met. (He’s) really down to earth, and he just wants to be good. I respect him so much. He grinds his butt off, comes to practice (and) workouts every day to get better, and he wants to be coached hard. You gotta love dudes that come in and bring that business mindset.”
Rattler is joined at this week’s Senior Bowl by wide receiver Xavier Legette. You can watch the two practice throughout the week on the NFL Network. The game will be held this Saturday at 1 p.m. on the NFL Network.
