“Spencer Rattler will be the quarterback for this game. We talked a lot as a staff about what we felt like was the best thing for us and gave us the best chance to win the game. That was the decision that we made. We’re excited about him getting the opportunity to go in there. We’ll let him go play and see what he can do,” Allen told reporters during his weekly press conference.

The Saints host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at 1:00 p.m. EST, with the contest set to be televised on Fox. Fans can also watch on the Fox Sports app.

In two seasons in Columbia, Rattler put together two of the best statistical seasons by a Gamecocks quarterback. He passed for 6,212 yards, completing 549-of-798 passes and tossing 37 touchdowns. His passing total of 3,186 yards in 2023 ranked as the third-highest in program history.

“He’s got athletic ability, he can throw the ball, he’s accurate,” said Allen. “He creates some plays on the scout team. I think this is a guy that has a lot of ability. He’s a rookie, so we know we’re going to have some challenges that go along with that. I think we’ll have a good plan for him and we’ll be excited about going out there and playing.”
