Spencer Rattler headlines Gamecocks' class as Top 5 portal prospect
With the May 1 transfer deadline now passed, On3 is locking in its 2022 transfer portal rankings and as one might expect South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler is, well, way up there.
The five-star who transferred from Oklahoma to South Carolina in January is ranked the No. 3 quarterback and the No. 5 overall prospect with a four-star rating in the On3 Transfer Portal Rankings.
Rattler has been the headliner for the Gamecocks’ nationally ranked portal class since he and tight end teammate Austin Stogner announced their intentions to transfer to South Carolina.
“After Lincoln Riley left for USC and not seeing a clear future in Norman, Rattler re-connected with former Oklahoma assistant Shane Beamer,” said On3’s Pete Nakos. “Reunited in the SEC, Rattler brings immediate legitimacy to a South Carolina team that suddenly has major momentum entering the summer.
That helped kick off what is now a nine-man incoming transfer class that On3 deemed as the fifth biggest winner in the portal this offseason.

The South Carolina incoming transfer who made the biggest jump in the new rankings is wide receiver Antwane Wells Jr. who joined the Gamecocks in the spring after two incredibly productive seasons at James Madison.
Wells went from unranked in the portal rankings to a four-star prospect and the No. 10 receiver and No. 47 overall prospect in the portal for 2022. A well-deserved bump after he put together an extremely impressive spring practice with the Gamecocks.
Stogner checks in next for the Gamecocks as the No. 68 overall prospect and No. 3 tight end in the portal.

South Carolina head football coach Shane Beamer said earlier this week that he was impressed with how Rattler and the Gamecocks’ other transfers have integrated themselves with their new surroundings.
“I think the thing I was most proud of is that’s not an easy transition coming into a new program when you’ve won a conference championship at another school,” said at the 2022 Peach Bowl Challenge Charity Golf Tournament. “You had a successful run as a starter (but) it didn’t end the way you wanted to this year, and then all of a sudden, you’re with a new team a month later. He came in and did a great job of just acclimating himself to our program. And our players have really embraced him and he’s embraced our players and South Carolina.”
