Spencer Rattler explains current team offseason workout routine
With the 2022 season now firmly in the rearview mirror and spring practice not yet underway, South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler and the Gamecocks are now currently in the middle of their winter workout program.
Rattler, who joined the Gamecock Central Takeover Hour on 107.5 The Game Tuesday, gave South Carolina fans a glimpse at what day-to-day life looks like right now for the team in head strength coach Luke Day’s workout regimen.

“Every day, pretty much Monday through Friday, we’re working out,” Rattler said. “Wednesday is our ‘off day’ but it’s our stretch day when we do our stretching. But every day we’re getting it in in the morning with three different groups, based off of position groups and stuff like that, but the strength staff has been doing a great job getting us right and then we’ll do our throwing sessions on Wednesdays and then maybe add an extra session on the weekend or something. It’s definitely going to ramp up a little bit here soon but we’re looking forward to it.”
As South Carolina’s returning starting quarterback, Rattler is in charge of helping organize those throwing sessions.
These are the off-the-radar, no cameras present, low-frills pass-and-catch workouts that are instrumental in creating rapport and timing for the upcoming season, especially among the newcomers on campus.
“It’s pretty laid back but I like to make sure it’s organized,” Rattler said. “We’re not running like our plays yet, just working on the route tree, getting a feel for guys’ hands and routes and timing. Just pretty much working every route with every different receiver, running back, tight end, so the whole groups been out there every time, so it’s been great.”

This time last year, Rattler was the newcomer. A former five-star quarterback from Oklahoma who was entering the program as the new big name on campus.
His plan? Put his head down and go to work.
Now with a year’s worth of experience in Columbia, Rattler has become more of a vocal leader with the 2023 team.
“Coming in last year, I just wanted to show my leadership through my work ethic and not talk too much because I was the new guy,” Rattler said. “But definitely now, I’m trying to be more of a leader, get better at that, keep improving in those areas with other leaders on our team.
“We’ve got a good group of leaders, about 15-18 guys that we rely on, they’re called our ‘Cornerstone Captains,’ so being one of those guys, pushing the new guys, helping the freshmen, the transfers and everything. Just welcoming them in and getting them used to everything. They’re doing great. They’re working hard and we’re just helping them along the way.”
