While the 2023 season has not gone as planned from a wins and losses standpoint for South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler, he seems to have no regrets.

After entering the transfer portal in November 2021, the former five-star prospect was in search of a new home.

His talent level ensured he would have plenty of options.

“I wanted to go somewhere where it meant something to win, the best conference, playing the best teams, that’s going to make you better as a player,” Rattler said on Tuesday during an appearance on The Garnet Trust Hour on 107.5 The Game.

Outside of Columbia, there probably were not many that thought South Carolina would ultimately be the pick for Rattler.

The Arizona product had not considered the Gamecocks out of high school. It was not a “blue blood” program. Those factors probably helped to deter suspicion for anyone trying to peg his next stop.

But the South Carolina program did meet the criteria Rattler was looking for at the time.

A friend and teammate at OU, Austin Stogner, was going to play for Shane Beamer, Stogner’s former position coach in Norman. Beamer and Rattler obviously had some familiarity with each other.

With less than a handful of games left as a player in the Garnet and Black, and plenty of ups and downs that have been experienced, Rattler is happy with the choice he made.

“Of course. God led me here, somehow, someway it was in the plan. It was written,” he said. “The feeling we had, the people here, the fanbase, everything about it is special. No matter win or loss, go out there and give 110 percent every game, and where the ball rolls, the ball rolls.”

The senior is expected to move on and prepare for his career as a professional in the National Football League after the season.

Gamecock fans will be happy to know that Rattler does not view South Carolina as just a stopover for him on his journey.

He plans on being back in the Palmetto State plenty even after his playing days in college are over.

“No doubt. I’ll be back no matter what. This is my home away from home,” he said. “I’m going to keep my spot out here. I’m going to keep my place because I’m going to be coming back for sure.”
