Spencer Rattler tops list of key transfers for Gamecocks
As summer workouts begin across the SEC and activity in the transfer portal slows, On3 recently analyzed the key pickup for each football team across the conference. The list of players in the Gamecock’s fifth ranked transfer class is topped by none other than quarterback Spencer Rattler.
The Oklahoma transfer has continued to create buzz across Columbia- and the country- since announcing his commitment to South Carolina in December.
“Last year at this time, Rattler was being hyped as one of the top Heisman contenders,” said On3’s Mike Huguenin. “Now, he’s looking to rebuild his career; in the process, he could become the best quarterback the Gamecocks have had in a decade”
The number one ranked quarterback in his class out of high school, Spencer Rattler spent three seasons at the University of Oklahoma. After acting as back-up to Heisman winner Kyle Murray in 2019, Rattler earned the starting job for the 2020 season and the first half of the 2021 season. In his time at Norman, Rattler threw for nearly 4,600 yards and 40 touchdowns.

Rattler is the fifth ranked overall player- and number three quarterback- in On3’s 20222 transfer portal ranking.
Hugeunin also notes two additional key transfers for the Gamecocks: tight end Austin Stogner (Oklahoma) and wide receiver Antwane Wells Jr. (James Madison). Both players have the ability to immediately impact a Gamecock offense that only averaged about 200 passing yards a game last season.
Stogner played with Rattler for three seasons at Oklahoma, making him an automatic key target for the quarterback. The Texas native tallied fourteen receptions and three touchdowns for the Sooners in 2021.
Wells Jr. comes to Columbia following a standout season at FCS program, James Madison. His 83 receptions for over 1,200 yards and fifteen touchdowns broke multiple single season school records as he totaled 8 games with over 100 receiving yards.
For now, the Gamecocks continue to prepare for the 2022 season which kicks-off at 7:30 pm ET on September 3 against Georgia State.
