Still plenty of room to grow for South Carolina after two non-conference wins
After a tough stretch that saw South Carolina drop consecutive games by a combined score of 92-37, South Carolina responded in a way it needed to.
The Gamecocks took care of two non-conference opponents 106-30 against Charlotte and FCS South Carolina State.
While neither result was unexpected, Shane Beamer thinks his team started playing better football over the last two weeks.
“I think we’re playing good football. Winning’s hard and I realize that people said okay coming out that Georgia game they got two non-conference games they’re going to win no matter what and all that,” Beamer said. “And that’s not the truth. I mean you’ve got to work hard, these are good football teams that we play that got good players.”

Tune-up games always provide good opportunities to iron out kinks exposed over the weeks prior.
The Gamecocks rushed for 295 yards against Charlotte and almost 200 against South Carolina State. That’s after rushing for a combined 211 through the first three weeks of the season.
When the run game can get going the Gamecock’s offense opens up. The unit provided 11 of the 14 touchdowns in the last two weeks.
“I feel like we’re playing better, are we playing our best football? No, there’s a lot to clean up. Still, I saw a lot of signs of us getting better as a football team over the last couple of weeks,” Beamer said.

“People think I’m crazy I mean I saw signs of that at Arkansas I saw positive things that believe it or not in the Georgia game and we just continue to get better.”

The defense also generated six turnovers from the two non-conference games. While generating a lone turnover against Georgia State, the team went dry against its first two SEC foes.
“We’re a work in progress we’re five games in and I think we’re a better football team than we were two or three weeks ago whenever it was that I sat in here after the Georgia game and we’ve got to get a lot better,” Beamer said. “Though there’s no question about it as we go into all SEC play and then Clemson at the end of the season.”
