Today isn’t just an ordinary Monday in the world of college athletics. Today, Dec. 5, marks the beginning of the NCAA transfer portal cycle.

During last year’s 2021-22 academic year, over 3,000 FBS student-athletes entered the portal. With the growth of NIL and one-time transfer exemptions, this year’s cycle is expected to be even bigger.

But something to keep in mind is that this year’s transfer portal will look a bit different. This past summer, the NCAA Board of Directors adopted several measures designed to assist with the larger number of student-athletes entering the transfer portal.

One of those changes is that players can no longer enter the portal any time they want. There are a few exceptions to this rule, but in most cases student-athletes will have 60 days throughout the academic year to enter the portal. The first period will last 45 days and has been labeled the “winter window.” That will run from Dec. 5-Jan 18. The second is the “spring window,” which for this academic year will run from May 1-15. The idea of the spring window is to allow players to enter the transfer portal after spring football, if they choose to.

Follow along with the On3 2023 College Football Transfer Portal Wire. You’ll be able to follow along with how many players are in the portal for each class, how many withdraw their names, and how many sign with new teams. In addition, you can see a student-athletes NIL value to give you an even better idea on the situation. Under “wire,” the On3 transfer portal tracker will show you dates for when a player appeared in the transfer portal as well as when they commit to a new school.
