Ty Good has chance to 'get a lot of swings and misses' on South Carolina pitching staff

Mark Kingston knows Ty Good has the stuff to be a really good for pitcher for South Carolina. If he’s on, he can be lights out.
“Ty’s best pitches really are his off-speed pitches,” Kingston said. “And for him, he needs to really pound the zone. When he does, he’s hard to hit.”
But that might be somewhat of an if.
“The challenge for him is to make sure he’s within the strike zone,” Kingston said. “At this level, guys will not quite chase the off-speed stuff as much as maybe he’s used to. So that’s going to be an adjustment for him. And when he does it, I think he’ll be very effective.”

One of the main problems for Good has been the walks. During his time at College of Charleston, this is something he struggled with. He walked 82 batters over the last two years.
But even with the higher walk numbers, Good was very effective for the Cougars. He sits second in program history in wins (25) and third in career strikeouts (274).

He was a two-time All-CAA pitcher and won CAA Pitcher of the Year this past season.
Good went 7-4 with a 4.26 ERA and 93 strikeouts. Teams hit .212/.327/.304 against him. He was even better in 2022, finishing 10-5 with a 3.61 ERA and 88 strikeouts.
“He’s a lot like Chris Veach,” Kingston said. “He’s got a plus change-up and when it’s on he can really get a lot of swings and misses.”
Kingston wouldn’t say if Good could be in a similar role to what Veach had for South Carolina last year as a closer and multiple-inning reliever. After all, Good comes over from Charleston as a veteran starting pitcher.
“He’s in consideration for a variety of roles,” Kingston said.
