Shane Beamer in Florence for Welcome Home Tour event - Mon. 5/6/24

If you pay attention to South Carolina football’s scholarship breakdown on GamecockCentral, you know that the Gamecocks are already projected to be full this fall at 85. But yet, they’re continuing to attack the transfer portal for additional players. So how does that work?

During a Welcome Home Tour event Monday night in Florence, Shane Beamer explained.

“We’re very healthy from a scholarship standpoint right now. (We) always try to be creative,” said Beamer. “We’re capped by the scholarship number but we’re also capped by the overall roster number, meaning scholarship and walk ons. That’s a number that we’re trying to balance also. All that stuff will sort itself out before we start practice in August.”

Last week, the Gamecocks added transfer wide receivers Dalevon Campbell and Vandrevius Jacobs. While Beamer wasn’t sure if he was able to mention them by name yet, once the ink is dry, South Carolina will be full for projected scholarships for the upcoming season. Yet, Beamer and his staff remain active in the transfer portal. Especially on the offensive line.

While there’s always the possibility that a player could be a walk-on, there are ways Beamer admitted in this era of college football that can help programs.

“With name, image, and likeness there’s a different avenue now to get creative, if needed. We’re really not but that’s something that some schools are from that standpoint. There’s conversations that we’ve had with guys, as well. There’s the rule that if you’ve graduated you can still go into the portal. So there may be a situation with that that transpires.”

Over the weekend, On3’s Pete Nakos reported that the Gamecocks were set to host UTEP transfer portal offensive lineman and current Vanderbilt commit Steven Hubbard on a visit this past weekend and Ohio State transfer offensive lineman Enokk Vimahi this upcoming weekend.

While Vimahi has since committed to Washington, Wes Mitchell had the latest with Hubbard for GC subscribers on Monday afternoon.

Stay tuned to GamecockCentral for updates on both players, as well as any additional South Carolina transfer portal news.
