With a banged up cornerback room, South Carolina redshirt freshman Vicari Swain played nearly the entire spring game on Saturday. An opportunity that he believes will only help him in the long run.
“It can beneficial. Giving me that many reps kind of helped me know what a real game is gonna be like,” explained Swain. “Playing the whole game, it just prepares me if that happens in the season, God forbid, I’m already prepared.”

Providing good coverage throughout the night, Swain’s highlight of the game came in the fourth quarter when he came up with a tremendous interception, high-pointing it on the run, to prevent an explosive play for South Carolina’s “Garnet” team’s offense.
“I was playing man (coverage) and my man went under. He ran a little out route. I think it was third-and-five or something and he went like two yards and I felt the corner(back) behind me and I kind of baited (the quarterback to throw it) and he threw to me.”

Swain has been competing to not only see more playing this season but he’s also in the mix to be a starter. Appearing in three games last season, he finished with two tackles with both coming against Furman. Swain certainly earned more trust from South Carolina’s coaching staff on Saturday and he’ll look continue to put pressure on sophomore Judge Collier for that other starting CB spot across from OD Fortune.
“(Last year as a freshman), learning how the old guys played by watching Marcellas Dial and OD, they’re kind of my inspiration of how I play DB,” Swain said earlier this spring. (Coach Torian Gray) really preaches on consistency. As long as I have consistency and I’m not making mental errors a lot, I think I’ll be able to be on the field.”
