A trip to Athens in 2019 as 20+ point underdogs resulted in a massive upset by the Gamecocks. But that was four years ago and only six of those players from that South Carolina team remain on this year’s roster.

“I was so young. I was 18 years old,” said running back Dakereon Joyner. “I was out there running like a chicken with his head cutoff. I was out there just trying to make plays. The environment was unreal and I think is one of the craziest places I’ve ever played at.”

Just like that year though, this year’s South Carolina team will play an unbeaten Georgia squad who is favored by more than three touchdowns.

“You just have to be poised, humble, and be confident in yourself,” said wide receiver Eddie Lewis. “Know that everything you did in the week is gonna show up on Saturday.”

“Last year against Tennessee and Clemson everybody was counting us out before the game started thinking that we couldn’t compete with them,” said defensive back Marcellas Dial. “We’re just trying to go down there and make a statement.”

But in order to do that, it starts with USC’s offensive line giving SEC Offensive Player of the Week Spencer Rattler time to throw the ball. Which could see true freshmen Oluwatosin “Tree” Babalade and Trovon Baugh back out there on the O-Line after seeing time last week against Furman.

“They made mistakes but to be in there as true freshmen playing left tackle and playing guard is pretty impressive,” said Shane Beamer. ” They’ll continue to get better. We know that the defensive front that they’re gonna face this week is different from what we saw last week against Furman. But just being able to get out there to get game action will do nothing but benefit them.”

That also could include seeing more of transfer running back Mario Anderson and Luke Doty at wide receiver.

“I’ve grown mentally. I wasn’t the strongest mentally coming in just because I was playing DII ball,” said Anderson. “I’ve had to adjust in that aspect and just mature a little bit more.”

“He used to watch me a lot and watch me grow through my transition and handle that similarly,” said Joyner about Doty. “But he does everything right. I think we all know that. He’s the type of guy that’s gonna continue to have success.”
