Video: Linebacker Fred Johnson commits to South Carolina
Heading into the month of June, South Carolina was already well ahead with their 2024 recruiting class in comparison to where they were the past two years. But that doesn’t mean Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks are taking the foot of the pedal this month after landing another commitment from the DMV.
Three-star linebacker Fred Johnson from Norfolk, VA has committed to South Carolina. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound backer was Beamer’s first of three “Welcome Home” tweets on June 12. That came just days after Johnson was on campus for an official visit. He chooses the Gamecocks over schools including Maryland, Virginia Tech, Duke, and Rutgers.

Rated as the consensus No.9 overall recruit from the state of Virginia, Johnson has gone under the radar a bit. Gamecock Central recruiting insider Wes Mitchell pointed out that the linebacker is still fairly new on On3’s recruiting boards. Despite that, he’s been able to start off with a high three-star grade, meaning there’s still room for Johnson’s stock to go up. One of those reasons why is because Johnson has put on 30 pounds of good weight since his original On3 weight was recorded at 195 pounds.

An athlete who plays on all three phases, Johnson has also shined as a wide receiver at Maury High School. Just last season he helped his team go (10-2) with an appearance in the 5A state championship game.

Johnson becomes the 11th recruit from the class of 2024 to go public with their commitment to South Carolina. He’s also the second prospect from the DMV currently committed to to the Gamecocks.

Prior to Johnson’s commitment, South Carolina had the No.7 class in the 2024 On3 Team Recruiting Rankings. But keep in mind, there’s still one more silent “Welcome Home” from that June 12th trio. Mason Love and Fred Johnson have gone public but now we wait for the third.
