Video: Marcus Satterfield reflects on last year, excited for new season

When you try something new in life, growing pains will usually follow. Such was the case last season for South Carolina’s offense.
With a year under his belt as offensive coordinator for the Gamecocks, Marcus Satterfield has had plenty of time to reflect on year one.

“(Last season) was probably the toughest thing I’ve ever gone through in my life,” said Satterfield. “To be honest with you, I came out proud of who I am on the other end. Proud of not just the toughness that I talk about but I can do it. The past ten years, the things that coach (Matt) Rhule and we have talked about: toughness, discipline, accountability. I was able to lay on my morals and just keep fighting.”
Having gone through rebuilds before during his time at Temple and Baylor, Satterfield knew there would be challenges but some were unforeseen. Such as the the musical chairs dance that took place at quarterback throughout the year due to injuries for South Carolina.

“It would’ve been easy for our players and our coaches last year to throw their hands up and say, ‘we don’t have a quarterback, we don’t have this, we don’t have that. Let’s just go recruit for the future. The future is bright.’ But we didn’t. We had the toughness every week to go look in the mirror and figure out a way to put ourselves out there to try to win a game. I think that speaks a lot about the toughness about our coaches and our players. Coming out of last season I think that’s what I’m more proud of than anything.”
Satterfield becomes the first South Carolina offensive coordinator since Bryan McClendon in 2018-19 to return as OC for a second straight season.
