After finishing last season ranked first in the country in special teams efficiency, South Carolina is treating special teams just like they are with any position when it comes to recruiting. And that’s looking to bring in the very best.
On Monday, the Gamecocks did just that but landing a commitment from punter Mason Love.

Ranked as the No.4 punter for the class of 2024, Love chooses South Carolina over California Berkeley, Army, Air Force, Navy, and Arkansas State. The Riverside, MO native recently visited USC on an official visit and it didn’t take him long before deciding that he wanted to join the Gamecocks. And why wouldn’t he?

While returning punter Kai Kroeger is a senior heading into 2023, he still has two years of eligibility remaining. But even with that being said, Love would be just one of three punters on USC’s roster. The other being walk-on William Joyce who has been providing depth on kickoffs and punting, as well as a holder. That means in the event that Kroeger returns in 2024, Love would have a chance to work with a top tier veteran punter for a year before becoming the likely starter in 2025. If that’s how things play out, it’d be a win-win for South Carolina.
Something else Gamecock fans will like about this commitment is a comment Love made about special teams coordinator Pete Lembo.

“I chose USC because Coach (Shane) Beamer and Coach Lembo are the best special teams minds in the country and have proven success at developing guys and sending them to the NFL,” Love told Gamecock Central’s Chris Clark.
South Carolina invested in Lembo this offseason by making him the highest paid special teams coordinator in the country who doesn’t hold an additional on-field coaching responsibility.
