Four games into the season and Spencer Rattler is playing on another level.

Never mind the fact that South Carolina ranks eighth in the nation in passing yards per game, but Rattler himself has done a phenomenal job of protecting the football. With those two things combined, it’s led him to earn more leash from offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains.

“There’s a line I always tell Spencer, it’s biblical,” said Loggains. “To whom much is given much is required. He’s earned my trust. Some days with him you feel like Superman as a play-caller. You can call anything and he’ll make it right. He’s spaghetti sauce, he’ll cover-up anything. He can get you out of bad plays and get you into good plays.”

In two of those four games, Rattler completed 90 percentage or more of his passes. And it’s not like he’s only throwing short passes as his top target Xavier Legette leads the nation with 556 yards receiving.

“I can’t speak enough about through the first four weeks and what he’s (meant) for me and my confidence as a play-caller and my confidence in this offense. You can take more risks. You’re not sitting in there at midnight saying, ‘Well, what if they do this? What if they do that?’ You know what, I bet we can teach Spencer if he sees this to get to that. That doesn’t happen very often.”

With already over 1,200 yards passing and seven touchdowns, Rattler isn’t only helping South Carolina. He’s also been able to help himself with his draft stock. Loggains is well aware of that but he’ll continue to give his QB tough love because he knows he’ll continue to need it starting this weekend in Knoxville.

“He’s had a really good four weeks. It’s just four weeks though. It’s the first quarter of the season and now we’re entering the second quarter… He deserves a lot of the credit he’s getting — he deserves all of it and the accolades. But it still comes down to work and preparation and making sure we keep doing it and that we’re doing it every week. Every day is an interview in this conference.”

With South Carolina playing Tennessee this weekend, it’s hard not to think back to Rattler’s program record six passing touchdown performance last year against the Vols. But as he said on Tuesday, this weekend is all about keeping their emotions in check and executing.
