'We have to be more creative with what we do:' Shane Beamer joined College GameDay
Prior to South Carolina hosting Georgia, Shane Beamer joined College GameDay from Williams-Brice. Beamer shed some light on what he believes USC will need to do if they want to upset the No.1 team in the land.
“For us, we need to play a whole lot better than we did at Arkansas last week,” said Beamer. “You have to win the turnover battle. We did not do that at Arkansas last week. We had a chance to win the game and we turned the ball over three times in the fourth quarter. That’s not a receipt for winning football games (or) pulling off upsets. But our guys are confident and excited and I can’t wait to watch them compete today. “

Through two games, stopping the run has been an issue for South Carolina. Heading into today’s game, the Gamecocks rank third to last in the country in rushing yards allowed per game. Or in other words 129th in FBS.
“It’s a line of scrimmage league and there’s nobody that does it better than these guys who we’re about to face. I like our group. Our guys up front both offensively and defensively on the line of scrimmage. We have to be better and quite frankly we got pushed around last week; our defense versus Arkansas. That was really disappointing to see. So one, we have to coach and layer better than we did last week but to me we have to be more multiple. We have to be more creative with what we do. To say we’re just gonna lineup in four down and lineup in base coverage probably ain’t gonna fly. We’ll have to commit more guys to the box. There’s no magic scheme. It comes down to a guy whipping another man and winning your one-on-one battles and we didn’t do enough of that last week.”

To make the challenge that much greater, Beamer shared that USC will be down five starters today on defense. Gamecock Central has learned those players are Mo Kaba, Cam Smith, R.J. Rodrick, Jordan Strachan, and Alex Huntley.
“We have some guys out but you know what? We have a really good football team. There’s no win one for the Gipper speech or shock the world with us. Our guys believe and are confident… We’re gonna have to have a big play on special teams. We commit so much time to it but I spent two years in Athens working for Kirby (Smart) and I know how much time he puts into it. And they have really good players out there on special teams as do we. We have to make a play on special teams and win in that area. That and the turnover battle.”
