Welcome home takes on a special meaning for South Carolina's Nate Adkins
Since Shane Beamer first arrived at South Carolina, “Welcome Home” has quickly become a motto for Gamecocks football. For transfer tight end Nate Adkins, Columbia has become for another special reason.
The graduate transfer is the son of South Carolina offensive line coach Greg Adkins, who heads into his second season with the Gamecocks.

“It’s been a cool deal. In the building it’s coach Adkins. Out of the building I can drive 20 minutes down the road and just talk to my dad,” said Nate. “It’s a cool thing and a very unique opportunity that not a lot of players get to go through. Especially at this level at South Carolina. I’m glad I made the decision to do this.”
Over the summer, Nate made the decision to transfer to South Carolina from East Tennessee State. During his time as a Buccaneer, he complied 73 catches for 749 yards and four touchdowns in 43 career games. 29 of those games were starts.

“He’s a coach’s kid,” said Greg. “And usually a coach’s kid understands the business side of things and the approach they need to take on a daily basis. What I’ve heard from the weight room staff this summer is exactly who I thought he was. I’ve never coached him. I’ve never coached any of my kids. It’s kind of cool.”
Greg began his coaching career in 1991. In those 32 seasons, he’s coached at nine different locations including two stints at his alma mater Marshall. Because of this, most of the time he’s only been able to see Nate play on TV or through highlights.
“Certainly he’ll find his niche, whatever it is. Wherever he can help this football team that’s what he’ll do. Whether it’s on the ball or spread out or in the backfield or special teams. Whatever his role is gonna be I know he’s gonna do it with his greatest ability.
