What Dowell Loggains and Clayton White said previewing Wofford
On Wednesday, South Carolina offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and defensive coordinator Clayton White met with the media to preview this weekend’s matchup with Wofford. Here’s what they had to say.
Dowell Loggains
— Made a lot of good plays during both two-minute drills to help win the Missouri game. LaNorris Sellers played well. Those are statements. You see poise, confidence, preparation, the moment not being too big.
— With the tight ends room banged up, you have to find your best 11. You take the pieces that you have that are healthy.
— They definitely showed Sellers his fumbles. It’s not fun when they have to shut the door and watch those things. He doesn’t have a lot of filed reps in the bank. So when you can show him other people who have fumbled, it helps. When you’re able to extend plays with your legs, that’s going to happen. There’s a cost of doing business.
— In the moment, he’s mad at Sellers for not seeing Brady Hunt wide open on the play where he broke out of the sack. He flushed a little earlier than he should’ve. His best ability is power to get out of those situations. At the end of the day, he has some eraser qualities.
— Proud of the way the unsung heroes from the Missouri game have worked. It’s the development of learning how to practice. It doesn’t surprise you when they make these plays. Nyck Harbor is working the right way. He told him to keep working and doing the right stuff and success will come.

— The guy who probably doesn’t get enough credit for the run game success is Ryan Yurachek. Loggains is going to have his hands in everything. It’s the staff coming together to merge and make the run game the best it can be. It takes everyone on the offensive staff. There’s been a lot of late night conversations between him and Lonnie Teasley going through tape and finding the best way to be successful.
— This is a what have you done for me lately type of environment to play in. That process of helping Sellers understand that started last year when he made his debut in the Furman game. Kept telling Sellers it would take time to get to where he is now. He’s had a lot of conversations with him about what it is like to play quarterback with all the spotlight on him. He grabbed him after practice yesterday to get after him very good. It’s great to earn all these awards but it doesn’t matter if you don’t play well this week. Sellers has an old soul. He’s mature. But he’s level headed. He does a good job of blocking out the rat poison.
— On the shovel pass, it was going to be one of Sellers, Rocket or Simon touching the ball on what would be the game-winning touchdown. Didn’t know the shovel pass would be the one they’d score on. In his mind, the best three guys were going to touch the ball in the moment. Rocket did a great job running through people. The blocking was good up front. Similar to the play they ran against Alabama. When you get down near the goal line, the confidence is so high. The shovel pass gets credited because it worked but they could’ve done a lot of other plays in that moment.
Clayton White
— Started last week out on their heels. Loved the way the defense played in the second quarter. Third and fourth quarter were a dog fight but they came away victorious. Excited to be back in Williams-Brice Stadium this week.
— Missouri runs outside stretch, it’s not an outside zone. You have to treat it like a triple option. Has to do a better job of preparing them for that on a full speed rep.

— Any time they have their first meeting of the year, the mindset is to put the ball down. The ball can be anywhere. The mindset is to put the ball down and play. You have to have the put the fire out mentality. That’s two games now where they’ve made a stop with no points allowed with a short field.
— The worst you can do to a guy is to beat him down, in reference to when Jalon Kilgore gave up the touchdown against Luther Burden. The offense gave them one more life to go out there and finish the game. That’s what Kilgore did with his game-sealing interception.
— Lot of respect for Wofford. This team will come in here and play hard. Knows what kind of tradition they have. They have some guys that they respect as players.

— Bam Martin-Scott is one of their top athletes on the field and on defense. Definitely an overlooked football player. His whole thing is wanting to be a consistent guy. Loves how versatile he is.
— Has to live in the moment when it comes to replacing the guys they’re set to lose on defense. His ultimate job is to make sure he supports the current players on the roster and show them love.
— Remembers the first time he walked into Kyle Kennard’s house when he first met him with the other defensive coaches. It’s awesome to see him have the season he’s had. His leadership and the type of person he is has been great. He shows everyne how to be a professional. He’s done a great job of putting his foot down and working. That’s going to be the bigger impression he’s going to leave on the younger guys.
— Beamer is a very confident guy to be talking about crying during movies. Everyone is different with how they handle things. Will be emotional but there will be no tears on senior day. If those guys need anything after football, they can call him.
