Following a 72-53 win over Arkansas on Saturday, South Carolina head coach Lamont Paris spoke to the media after the game. Below is a summary of what he had to say.

– Really happy for the guys. It was Legends Weekend, so spent some time with those guys before. Glad to have two really good performances at home. Hopefully can build some momentum heading into the SEC tournament. These guys are resilient. They have come out with tremendous energy. That defensive performance doesn’t come via accident. They’re playing hard, competing at a high level. Fun to have them play well against a talented team.

– First two plays specifically were set to toss the ball inside. Were going to be committed to that this game. Did have some misses down low, but had really good looks, and getting inside was a point of emphasis today. Wanted to come out and throw the ball inside as often as possible. Had some good successes with it, had strong moves near the basket.

– Tremendous effort, had other games where the effort was good but results didn’t follow. Not only was today’s performance about effort, it was about actions on defense too. Arkansas’s poor shooting was a byproduct of nailing down the defensive basics from the Gamecocks today. Team was lights out with their defensive maneuvers.

– Wanted a man on Ivišić the entire time. He’s got a quick release. Some of the ball screen situations, had to switch on those to make sure the team had a body on him. Arkansas has good sets for him, they run him off of down screens and fade screens. Did a good job getting to those early to discourage him from shooting. Kept him from getting confidence. Same with D.J. Wagner.

– Have worked with Butler to get some plays going for him. Probably the best game of his life from an aggression standpoint. He’s very nimble for a guy of his size, had some shot fakes, he was really good. Aggressive defensively too. Sniffed out a lob and closed the ground. Made some physical plays. Really encouraging from him today. Predicated on a sense of energy.

– Hopefully things can revert back to the mean when it comes to opponent perimeter shooting. Have played the numbers with perimeter defense and been burnt a few times, good to see this today.
