What Lamont Paris said after South Carolina's loss to Texas A&M on Saturday
Following a 76-72 loss to Texas A&M on Saturday, South Carolina head coach Lamont Paris spoke to the media after the game. Below is a summary of what he had to say.
– In some way, it feels like some levels of Groundhog Day. Guys played extremely hard, played well enough. Goal is that no matter how good the team is, to have an opportunity in crunch time. Found ourselves in that situation, but couldn’t make the plays needed.
– Gave up an offensive rebound on the free throw, that’s something that needs to be secured. Turnover on the next possession, that was of the team’s own volition.
Question: What to say about A&M’s three point shooting?
– Hit one in desperation, hit another from very deep. Taylor is a tremendous player, hadn’t been shooting well from deep but today was his day. Put a couple of different guys on him, tried a zone which worked a bit, but the defense needs to be more aggressive in that situation. Taylor was making difficult shots. They hadn’t been doing that (making deep shots) but the Aggies were making them tonight. Credit to Taylor for stepping up, they needed him to do that today.

Question: Did Texas A&M do something to allow SC to shoot a large amount of threes?
– They give up a lot of threes. They have tremendous athletes, so they can recover well. In the first half, SC moved ball around well enough for Texas A&M to have trouble getting to contest threes. Part of the way they play defense is to be ok with their opponent attempting a decent volume of threes.
Question: Butler got early minutes and hit a quick three. Can he grow from this?
– Hope he can continue to grow. Glad to see that shot go in. You’ll go out there on gameday and you’re either going to make it or miss it. He made it. Paris wants CMB to be more aggressive with field goal attempts, wants him to shoot it more. With Butler out there more than before, it gives Collin more space. Murray-Boyles is a better player when he’s in space. The decision to put Butler out there was a calculated decision.
Question: On an off week, how does the team approach it?
– In terms of practice, that’ll probably change. South Carolina will do more offensive stuff. The looks of the practices will change, will do more light-hearted, competitive stuff. Less coaching, more competition. It’s not about grinding them or yelling at them.
