Following a 14-4 win over Gardner-Webb on Tuesday, South Carolina head coach Paul Mainieri met with the media. Below is a summary of what he had to say.

— The game started a little inauspiciously. Fell behind quickly 2-0. Jase Woita gave them a spark and then they started to hit after that. Went on to a good victory. It was kind of a trap game for them with the series looming. They weren’t able to practice yesterday. But fortunately, they got some hits and had some hitting weather.

— KJ Scobey is going to be a really good hitter in this program. He’s already an outstanding player.

— Applauds the effort by Dalton Mashore to dive for that foul ball in the first inning. Play the game with 100 percent and hair on fire. He’s a hustling ballplayer and an outstanding right fielder. Doesn’t think he is hurt in any way, might not get a date, though.

— Mainieri made three pitching changes in the seventh inning. Parker Marlatt hadn’t thrown since Tuesday. He needed to get into the game. But he only threw one pitch. Brendan Sweeney hadn’t thrown since Friday. he wanted them to get some time on the mound before the weekend. Didnt want them to think about the score. Just pitch like a regular outing.

— Thinks he knows who the best nine are but wants to keep the team active and engaged. you never know when you’re going to need them. He was worried he might lose Kennedy Jones to a broken hand the other day. But the X-rays came back negative. You have to make sure the next man up is ready to play at a high level. It’s been good to get some guys opportunities.

— He was worried about the players looking ahead to Clemson because all anyone talks about is that series. It’s crazy people talk about that series more than SEC play. No matter what happens this weekend, there will still be a lot of baseball left. They’re going to do everything they can to win the series. Not downplaying the games. He just knows, that whatever happens, there’s a lot of season left. Can’t overdo it with his players.

— Hopes the teams will show good sportsmanship to each other. Knows they have a couple of players from Clemson with Nathan Hall and Nolan Nawrocki. This weekend will be great baseball.

— He doesn’t know if these two run-rule wins do much for the offense going against a quality pitching staff this weekend. Expects the series to be one or two-run games. Loved to see the homers tonight but would rather see runners on base for those solo shots that they hit. You won’t beat really good teams with solo homers. They need to hit in the clutch and get those multi-run homers.
