One of the latest additions to South Carolina’s 2023 recruiting class is one of the now more oft-talked-about Gamecocks as spring practice starts.

South Carolina flipped four-star quarterback LaNorris Sellers from Syracuse, landing the top-100 prospect and now he’s getting a ton of praise from his teammates.

And, despite being a quarterback in what’s been a crowded quarterback room, Shane Beamer said the in-state passer will continue to be 100 percent a quarterback.

“There’s not been a single conversation with LaNorris about being anything other than a quarterback. That question came up in recruiting from LaNorris and his family. (They asked) ‘Do you envision him being anything but a quarterback?’” Beamer said Tuesday.

“I said, ‘One billion percent, no. He’s a quarterback, period.’ If anyone’s had that conversation with him, it’s not me and they’re doing it without my knowledge. No. He’s a quarterback.”

On3 considers Sellers the No. 95 prospect in the country and the eighth-best quarterback in the 2023 class. He’s the highest-rated early enrollee on campus currently. Only two summer enrollees–Nyck Harbor (31) and Vicari Swain (51)–ahead of him.

He’s been on South Carolina’s campus now since January, getting acquainted with the weight room. And trying to get up to speed on Dowell Loggains’ new system with the Gamecocks.

Beamer also said Sellers is “working his rear end off” trying to diminish the learning curve. Beamer said, despite two veterans ahead of the group in Spencer Rattler and Luke Doty, he’s not ruling out Sellers being able to play some as a freshman.

“We want to give every young man the opportunity to play if they’re ready to play and can help us. What the NCAA allows us to do in the offseason you’re able to get guys ready to play easier than in years past,” Beamer said.

“He’s working his rear end off to try and learn everything we’re doing. Football’s really important to him. He runs around with Pup Howard all the time and they’re all about football. He’ll do everything in his power to get ready.”

Sellers is in a quarterback room headlined by Rattler and Doty but a swath of young players behind them.

Colten Gauthier is also coming back for his third season with the program. The Gamecocks have two redshirt freshmen in the room also with Tanner Bailey and Braden Davis.

The spring is vital for all of those guys trying to split reps and figure out how that room will look coming out of the spring and entering preseason camp.

“There’s a lot of other guys battling it out to try and figure out how that quarterback room shakes out. It’s a challenge for us as coaches to get all the guys equal reps and get a good evaluation on all of them,” Beamer said. “But we haven’t told anybody, ‘Here’s what we think your role is going to be.’ It’s about doing everything in your power to play this season and help.”
