Shane Beamer has prioritized NFL experience when adding coaches to the Gamecocks’ program, and he brought on another one this week to his support staff.

Beamer and South Carolina officially announced Sean Ryan–who has spent the last 15 years in professional football–will join the staff in somewhat of an analyst role this season.

“We’ve brought on sean as an offensive assistant. I didn’t really know him well. I knew of him for a long time when he worked for the Houston Texans,” Beamer said. “Bill O’Brien was the coach of the Texans. Billy was the running backs coach when I was at Georgia Tech as a graduate assistant Billy was the head coach…Just watched him coach and knew of him.”

Ryan will serve in a role similar to that of Freddie Kitchens, who came in last season as an analyst and left this offseason for an on-field role at North Carolina.

Before coming to the Gamecocks, Ryan was most recently with the Carolina Panthers the team’s quarterbacks coach. He’s also been with the Lions, Texans and Giants at the NFL level.

Along with coaching quarterbacks at each stop, he was a quality control and receivers coach for the Giants and also coached receivers during his stint in Houston.

He last spent time in college as Harvard’s running backs coach and recruiting coordinator but also was at Columbia, Boston College, Colgate and Albany.

While the two never coached together, Ryan does have familiarity with new offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. Loggains is another longtime NFL quarterbacks coach who took over for Marcus Satterfield this offseason.

What Ryan’s day-to-day role might look like is still to be determined, but Beamer wants him as another sounding board for South Carolina’s offensive staff.

“He had some connections to Dowell and it’s just another set of eyes, very similar to the role Freddie Kitchens was in last year,” Beamer said. “He’s another set of eyes for the guys in that offensive staff room. Someone that has coached offense for a long time and can continue to make us better.”

Hiring analysts is always something Beamer puts thought into, not wanting to bring people in for the sake of bringing someone into the program.

He’s persnickety about who he brings into the program and why he does, which means he and Loggains see ways for Ryan to benefit the Gamecocks in 2023.

“I’m a less is more guy,” Beamer said. “I don’t want to be hiring people just to hire people. I don’t want a ton of people in this program who don’t have defined roles. This is an opportunity to get someone in here who can make us better.”
