What Shane Beamer said about South Carolina offensively Sunday
Shane Beamer held his weekly Sunday teleconference, recapping South Carolina’s 41-point loss to Georgia Saturday.
In it, he was asked about South Carolina’s offense, which was blanked for most of the game and has been inconsistent through the first three games of the year.
Here’s what he had to say when asked about the offense as a whole Saturday.

On if he’s satisfied with the overall look, play calls and scheme on offense:
“I am. Every game you go back and look and you certainly evaluate. There are some calls I would like to do differently yesterday and some things I did. There are some things Marcus (Satterfield) would, Clayton (White) would, Pete (Lembo) would as well. That’s after every game. I understand the why of every call and why we’re calling it.
I’m involved in meetings during the week in all three phases: offense, defense and special teams. I know what the game plan is and trying to get done. We can certainly always be better. We certainly always trying to put guys in positions to make plays. Overall, it is what it is. It’s not good enough but I know we’ll be better.”
On what he and the rest of the coaching staff can do to be better:
“We continue to emphasize it and continue to practice really well. Ultimately we put guys in positions to make plays. Guys got to make plays. There were a lot of plays out there to be made yesterday. There were a lot of tackles out there to be made yesterday and we weren’t able to get guys on the ground. There were a lot of opportunities we have to continue to put guys in positions to make plays. Then our guys have to continue to make plays as well.

Before anybody says that Shane is saying players have to play better, we have to coach better and put our guys in positions to make plays. That’s not what I’m saying at all. We have to continue to emphasize it in meetings during the week, preparation going into games with the way we prepare. That makes it easier on Saturdays. Then the way we practice during the week. If we practice really hard, practice well and create great habits good things tend to happen on Saturdays. I’ve been pleased with the way we’ve practiced but it certainly hasn’t been good enough.”

On what the offense can do to be more consistent when explosive plays aren’t there:
“We just have to continue to create great habits in practice and continue to make plays when they present themselves. There were a lot of opportunities out there yesterday and weren’t able to get them done.”
On Georgia getting penetration on a few third down calls:
“We ran the counter play with DK on that first third down. I don’t think we necessarily gave up a ton of penetration. That was a simple counter play that was an RPO. (Dakereon Joyner) could have kicked the ball out there on the bubble screen if he wanted to and felt like he had numbers. I don’t fault him at all for keeping the ball there. DK would tell you if you asked him but ideally, we would love to see him keep that ball and cram it up in the A gap a little bit. Their guy did a good job trying to compress our guard that was coming to kick him out and trying to compress him a little bit and muddy it up. I think (Austin) Stogner was in there and DK felt like he needed to bounce it outside where there’s an unblocked guy. But I don’t think that was penetration.
One I know you’re probably referring to is when they ran the counter again on the other end of the field going in. they line up in a little bit of an unusual front. Their linebacker, No. 2 lined up right over the center. It’s the same thing on that one. We made a call, Eric Douglas did, and told the offensive line what front they were in. For whatever reason one of our guys didn’t block down on that linebacker lined up on the center. If he does, that probably has a chance to be a really big play for us. I would say it’s a combination of them being good and we’re going to get beat on some blocks at times. But unfortunately, some of it was miscommunication and mental errors for us. That goes back to us as coaches and teaching it a little bit better and conveying what needs to happen a little bit better.”
