Following South Carolina’s 50-7 win over Akron on Saturday, head coach Shane Beamer spoke to the media about the game. Here’s what he had to say.

— Really proud of the team tonight. This was a tough week coming off last Saturday’s loss to LSU. Proud of the way the guys responded. It’s a testament to them.

— Certainly had a setback last week and this week set them up for a good response.

— This atmosphere says so much about the fans to where they filled out the place after a tough loss. The stadium was rocking. So appreciative of the fans.

— Had to adjust early on in the game. Knew they’d have to adjust to a lot of new stuff Akron was throwing at them. Really proud of the way the team started the game. Wasn’t happy with the way they finished the first half. Was really excited about the way the team played in the second half.

— Really cool to get so many young guys into the game and see them have fun. That’s what it’s all about.

— Can’t say enough about the way Robby Ashford prepared and performed.

— Thinks they’re okay injury wise. Didn’t think they needed to put LaNorris Sellers out there. Rocket Sanders has a little bit of an ankle thing. Doesn’t think it’s anything long term at all. Jared Brown should be good to go next week. Monkell Goodwine should be good for next week.

— Ashford did some good things. Thought he prepared the right way and performed really well.

— Feels very confident in the quarterback play after Sellers. Feels like they have multiple quarterbacks. Robby took a step for sure. He played a lot better than he even practice. Really proud of Davis Beville too. He’s an awesome teammate. Super supportive.

— It wasn’t like they changed a ton of what they did on offense for Ashford in the game. They probably had less passes in the game plan for him compared to Sellers. They tried to go more with tempo. It was a combination of scheme and getting the ball on the perimeter.

— There’s great competition in the WR room. Felt like Gage Larvadain had a better week of practice and wanted to start him. All of those guys work. Nyck Harbor did some nice things. There’s a lot to clean up but they’ve got guys that can make competitive catches. They continue to grow and get better.

— Hated to lose Sanders. Had a plan to play more of the running backs anyway. Weren’t going to make a living with Sanders playing 50 plus snaps every game. Wanted to get the other backs some work regardless of score. Adaway did a nice job along with Howell and Fuller. They showed flashes. The plan was to get Juju in there a little bit more. All those guys did a good job.

— They have a lot of depth and everyone has each other’s back. There was no panic when it looked like Ashford was going to start. They’ve recruited well and brought in the right guys from the transfer portal. There’s not a huge drop-off at each position. It was good to get some guys experience.

— Wanted to be aggressive and attack early. Decided on Thursday they were going to run the two-point play that Kai Kroeger ran in on. Wanted to be on the attack and not sit around and wait for something to happen. It was by design.

— Already worked on the practice schedules for next week with the bye. Going to practice Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday to get better. Need to get better in the passing game.

— Doesn’t feel content going into the bye week. Feels mad and that they should be 4-0 right now. Learned from last week. Moved on from that loss but still thought about some of what went wrong as the week went on. There were so many things in that game they brought onto themselves.

— If they focus on what’s ahead, they’ll continue to get better and have a chance to do some special things.
