Following South Carolina’s 36-33 loss to No. 16 LSU on Saturday, head coach Shane Beamer spoke to the media and broke down the game. Here’s what he had to say.

[Win two tickets to the South Carolina-Akron football game]

— What a football game. Told the players it was going to be an SEC heavyweight fight and it would come down to the fourth quarter and it did.

— Loved the energy the fans brought today. It was a big statement about South Carolina from the standpoint of the entire day.

— Proud of the team. But in the end, LSU made one more play in the end. Lot of great players on both teams. Wants to apologize to the fans for having 13 penalties. Doesn’t know if he’s ever seen two defensive touchdowns come back on penalties. It’s disappointing. Way too many self-inflicted mistakes.

— Was told by the refs on the first pick six on the horse collar that it was absolutely certain. Tells his guys they need to get the quarterback blocked on the second interception. It’s a tough call. Can’t put themselves in that spot.

— Told the team he was proud as heck of them. They kept coming. Defense was put in some tough situations and just in general with injuries. There were a lot of good performances. But they need to play smart football. Didn’t do a great job of that.

— They were a confident team going into this game. They are still very confident after this game. Went toe-to-toe with LSU and fell short.

— On Sellers: he’s got an ankle sprain. Thinks he’ll be fine. Taped him up during halftime. Gave it a shot with playing him in the second half hoping the adrenaline would kick in. But realized if he’s not able to move how he can, it wasn’t worth it.

— Had to burn the timeout on the false start penalty before the field goal. That was tough. Was thinking they’d love to get two plays in. But when the play happened before the field goal, he wanted to make sure they had a shot to at least tie the game and go for the field goal. Had confidence in Alex Herrera and wanted to be smart and kick the field goal.

— Proud of Robby Ashford. Thought he did a great job. Thought this would be one heck of a story if he led a field goal or touchdown drive at the end. Apologized to the team for not getting Herrera in better field goal range. That’s the type of kid he is.

— Try and educate the guys on penalties and they need to be smarter. Some of them come down to lining up the right way and getting in position. Need to go back and look at it and emphasize it even more.

— TJ Sanders should be fine. He has a little bit of a foot injury.

— Weren’t quite good enough today. LSU has an explosive offense. They showed it today. There were some big time performances on their offense. Too many yards given up by the defense.

— Ball security is already a concern. Have to be better back there. Put the defense in a bad position. Haven’t done a good enough job of preaching it.

— He was told midweek Sellers was going to try out some contacts. Told him to be him out there. Said Sellers just wanted to try contacts. Had his vision tested already. He just wanted to wear contacts and Beamer was cool with it.

— The field position was a struggle in the third quarter. Should’ve been extremely fresh but the defense was out there a lot in that quarter. It was big. It’s disappointing they had the lead in the fourth quarter and couldn’t finish.

— There will be a lot to correct from this game. They need to clean up a lot but there’s also a lot to build upon. All need to be better.
