What Shane Beamer said during his Sunday evening teleconference after Ole Miss loss
South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer spoke to the media one day after the Gamecocks’ 27-3 loss to Ole Miss during his Sunday night teleconference. Here’s what he had to say.
— Nowhere near good enough. Really disappointing to perform like that. Surprised by it with the prep and focus they had.
— Certainly need to play and perform a whole lot better.
— Defensive standouts: Judge Collier, Jalon Kilgore, Nick Emmanwori, all the guys at defensive tackle played well.
— Special teams: Gerald Kilgore did a nice job.
— Will have updates on injuries on Wednesday night in the availability report.

— Thinks the offensive struggles were a combination of things. It’s nowhere near good enough when you score three points. Ran the ball decent. The rushing yardage came down with sacks. But on called runs they were productive. Hit some things in the passing game. Not good enough on third down. Everyone had a hand in it. Underlying theme would be details. Need to be more detail-oriented.
— Wanted to get Robby Ashford in there yesterday. Knew LaNorris Sellers was going to play but didn’t want him to take too much of a pounding. We’re going to play both QBs to help them both out and the offense. Sellers got in there and felt good so they were hesitant to take him out. Wanted to do more with Ashford. But the fumble was disappointing and limited what they did after that with him.
— On accepting the penalty on the Kyle Kennard sack, initially they missed sack and the QB got closer to the line of scrimmage. As Dart scrambled, he went backwards more. Poor job to accept the penalty. His thinking was to get them farther away from field goal range. Bad on his part. Wasn’t good enough there. Usually talks to the officials to see what the down in distance would be.
— His thinking on the timeout to avoid the 10-second runoff at the 1-yard line was they were losing and wanted to save time for the offense to generate a two-minute drive with 30 seconds left before halftime. Thought the time was more important than the timeouts. Didn’t concede a touchdown to them but if they scored they still had 30 seconds and a timeout, which was plenty of time to drive down.

— Need to be willing to take shots and call them and throw the ball down the field. Didn’t have enough explosive plays yesterday. One of the keys to the game was tackling on defense and they did for the most part. Along the same lines, needed to break more tackles on offense and couldn’t do that.
— They hold the players accountable and address the guys within the program. Playing smart football is one of the five ways they win football games around here. Didn’t do that yesterday. Need to continue to look at how the emphasize and coach on those mistakes.
— You look at the whole body of work when it comes to practice, the week and looking at everything. Overall, thought they had a real edge on special teams and they didn’t perform well from that standpoint. Thought a lot about the frustrations last night. Been sitting in the facility ever since 5:15 a.m. and wanted to make sure he got in there with plenty of time. Had a very thorough meeting today to look at everything.
— There’s great parity in college football now. With the portal, teams can change yearly. You see a lot of true freshmen on a lot of different teams. It’s been that way in college football where anyone can beat anyone. That’s especially true now. Sometimes you forget these are 18 to 20-year-old men. It’s a different time but the competition is great for college football. Not where South Carolina wants to be right now. A lot to fix. This is a new week. Team will be judged by how they respond. Knows the guys in the program are invested and hurt from yesterday. His job is to help them be better.
