South Carolina coordinators Dowell Loggains and Clayton White previewed Texas A&M on Wednesday.

Dowell Loggains

– On the intentional groundings vs Texas A&M: They’ve been on Spencer Rattler about not taking negative plays on first and second down. Said they weren’t all on Rattler, some were due to missed blocks/missed assignments

– Mario Anderson keeps growing as a running back. Calls him professional and he’s learned how to play without the ball. Pass pro keeps improving and his communication with the tackles on chips has improved, which has led to the coaching staff having more confidence in him. The next step is for him to start taking care of his body more, as it’s something he’s learning still since his workload has increased.

– On Nyck Harbor: He cares deeply. He’s told everyone in the building thank you for giving him a chance to play. He was down on the sideline after the first drop but the team rallied around him and he bounced back.

– Adds that Harbor is “so unusual from the aspect of being a track guy that has made the full transition to football.” Says his uniqueness reminds him of some of the guys he’s coached in the NFL like DK Metcalf, Randy Moss, and Alshon Jeffery. But it’s hard to compare him because of his size and speed since he’s built different

– Coaches don’t want to be around him after a bad practice. Hates having a bada practice more than losing. Doesn’t want to use the injuries on the OL as an excuse. Has some talented young OL who are working their butts off

Clayton White

– The 3-3-5 package they showed against Texas A&M just gives them a different look to throw at teams that allows them to use their speed more

– Calls Jaron Willis a guy that has good size, can run, and can move.

– OD Fortune will remain the starter but they’ve been very pleased with how Judge Collier has stepped up.

– Says last week the energy was up at practice. They were really focused and that showed early against Texas A&M

– On Jacksonville State’s offensive: They’re an up tempo offense with a veteran offensive coach. They have an athletic quarterback with speed all over the field.

– Added that they remind him of Tennessee and what they like to do with speed

– White shares that he wasn’t involved in the conversations to bring Jalon Kilgore in as the punt returner. But as a former special teams coordinator himself, he was supportive about it. Knows that not everybody can be a punt returner.

– White would like to see the targeting rule change. Says maybe a guy should be able to come back after one half, not a half and then the first half of the next game. As far as DQ Smith’s targeting ejection from this past weekend goes, he knows why they called it the way they did. It was about Smith’s safety, since he dropped the crown of his helmet.
