What stood out about South Carolina to transfer QB Robby Ashford
When Robby Ashford hit the transfer portal back in December, he didn’t know what his future would look like. But after having a chance to talk with Shane Beamer and offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains a few weeks later, he knew that South Carolina was were he wanted to be.
“Listening to coach (Dowell Loggains) and what he has to offer, I’ve never seen some of the stuff he showed me. I’m like man, I never even thought of it in this light,” said Ashford. “I’d say he’s the best in the business. Just to see Spencer (Rattler’s) improvement from the 2022 season, which was a great year, to the 2023 season — just to see how much more pro ready he is, how can you not look at that and be intrigued and want to play for a coach like that?”

Appearing in 22 games in two seasons at Auburn, Ashford threw for 1,758 yards, nine touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He also rushed for 927 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. With two years of eligibility remaining, having the chance to grow and compete is what excites him the most.
“I just haven’t had (the chance to be developed) from coaches. There’s been a lot of instability (at Auburn),” said Ashford. “Once I met (Loggains), I was like I can learn a lot. He can help me improve just on the little things. I’ve played in this conference and it’s a gauntlet, week in and week out. I remember (South Carolina’s coaching staff) vividly telling me, ‘You’re an SEC player… There were circumstances (out of your control) and we know that.”

Ashord joins rising sophomore LaNorris Sellers and true freshman Dante Reno as the only QBs on scholarship for the Gamecocks. The room also includes walk-on Davis Beville who transferred in from Oklahoma. While Luke Doty is expected to work more with the wide receivers this season, Doty has the most experience of playing quarterback at South Carolina.
“I want to bring the things I’ve learned, in a positive way, over here. Playing in the SEC, it’s the greatest conference in the country. I was looking at a lot of schools and a lot of schools were promising things but at the end of the day I knew I wanted to stay in the SEC and compete for a job. I didn’t want anything handed to me. I want to earn the trust and respect of my coaches and teammates because that’s what I feel like it all comes down to at the end of the day.”
