What we know about South Carolina men's basketball's non-conference schedule
South Carolina is still in the throws of the offseason, putting the final touches on both next year’s roster and next year’s schedule before school resumes in a few months.
With still plenty left to be decided schedule-wise, here’s what we do know about the Gamecocks’ non-conference schedule.
South Carolina will have one of its first games against a marquee opponent on a neutral floor.
The Gamecocks will play Virginia Tech Nov. 10 as part of a doubleheader in Charlotte at the Spectrum Center, the Hornets’ arena.

The Hokies aren’t coming off the most stellar of years (No. 75 in KenPom). But they won the ACC Tournament in 2022. They have also been to the tournament twice in four seasons under Mike Young.
Young was the longtime coach at Wofford, building the Terriers into one of the best programs in the SoCon during his nearly two-decade stint in Spartanburg. The last time these two teams played was in 1997, a 74-73 South Carolina win.
The annual rivalry game with Clemson will be on the road this season. According to the D1Docket, it will be Wednesday, December 6 at a time to be determined.
The Gamecocks’ won last year’s home game in dramatic fashion with Chico Carter drilling a buzzer-beater to down the Tigers in Lamont Paris’ first season.
Clemson finished last season with 23 wins and went 14-6 in the ACC but missed the NCAA Tournament.
South Carolina’s MTE this season will be in Phoenix in a four-team tournament that will reportedly include DePaul, Grand Canyon and San Fransisco.

That tournament will be two games–one on Nov. 17 and another Nov. 19–with matchups still to be announced.
DePaul finished last season 10-23 (3-17 Big East) in Tony Stubblefield’s second season there while Grand Canyon won the WAC last year and was a No. 14 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The Antelopes–coached by former Vanderbilt head coach Bryce Drew–have been to two tournaments in three seasons, losing in the first round this year to Gonzaga.
San Fransisco went 20-14 in Chris Gerlufsen’s first season as the Dons’ head coach with a 7-9 record in the WCC. They did make it to the semi-finals of the WCC tournament before losing to Gonzaga.

According to the D1Docket South Carolina has home games on the books with George Washington and VMI. The one against the Cadets will be part of that MTE in Phoenix.
Neither game has a date yet.

The Gamecocks lost at George Washington last season as part of a two-game road trip. The Colonials finished 16-16 in Chris Caputo’s first year leading the program.
VMI also broke in a new head coach last season after Dan Earl left to take the Chattanooga job Lamont Paris vacated to come to South Carolina.
Andrew Wilson–who played at Florida State and was previously an assistant at James Madison–went 7-25 in his first season (2-16 SoCon). His team finished No. 354 in KenPom out of 356 teams.
Outside of Clemson, there are three road games on the books, per the D1Docket. The Gamecocks are scheduled to play at East Carolina Dec. 9 and at Western Kentucky Dec. 12.

Those contracts were likely on the books before Paris and his staff took over. East Carolina beat the Gamecocks at a neutral site last season 64-56. South Carolina beat the Hilltoppers at home last year 65-58.
ECU will be in year two under Mike Swartz after a 16-17 year one. Steve Lutz takes over for Rick Stansbury at WKU.
South Carolina still has a few more non-conference games to fill out before putting the final touches on its 2023-24 schedule.
