Where South Carolina baseball landed in this week's top 25 polls

South Carolina is off to its best 17-game start in almost a decade. And the Gamecocks continue moving up the top 25 rankings this week. 

They moved up in both of the major Division I college baseball polls this week. The program also sits inside the top 10 of the very early season RPI heading into SEC play. 

D1Baseball was the lone poll ranking South Carolina heading into the offseason. And the Gamecocks and they’re now on the cusp of being a top-15 team.

The Gamecocks moved up four spots to No. 16 in the D1Baseball rankings after a perfect week. They’re the only one-loss team in the top 25 that sits outside the top 15. Virginia is 14-1 and two spots ahead of South Carolina at No. 14. 

South Carolina is the eighth-highest-ranked SEC team. Four of the top five teams in the country came from the league and six of the first seven teams.

LSU, Tennessee and Ole Miss are the top three teams in D1Baseball’s rankings. Florida checks in at No. 5 followed immediately by Vanderbilt and Arkansas.

Texas A&M sits one spot ahead of South Carolina at No. 15.

The only other SEC team in the top 25 is Alabama, which dropped to No. 24 this week. 

After jumping into the Baseball America top 25 last week, the Gamecocks are up four spots to No. 19 this week. 

Baseball America ranks LSU (1), Florida (2), Tennessee (4), Ole Miss (6), Arkansas (7), Vanderbilt (8) and Texas A&M (11) ahead of South Carolina in this week’s poll. 

The RPI also has South Carolina at No. 7 in its formula, the best team in the SEC currently. South Carolina has an 83rd-ranked strength of schedule while its 5-1 in the first quadrant. 

The Gamecocks also have three wins over RPI No. 32 Penn and a series win over Clemson, which sits at No. 45 in the RPI entering the fifth week of the season.

South Carolina hasn’t played any Quadrant II games but the Gamecocks are a perfect 14-0 in the last two quadrants. 

Boston College, Wofford, Columbia, Northeastern, Virginia and also NC State are the teams ranked ahead of them in the RPI. LSU (12), Ole Miss (13) and Arkansas (14) are the other SEC teams in the top 15 of the RPI. 

The Gamecocks are coming off a perfect 5-0 week that culminated in two midweek wins over The Citadel and USC Upstate while sweeping Bethune-Cookman. 

South Carolina run-ruled the Wildcats Friday night then swept a Saturday doubleheader 8-5, 10-3 respectively.

Things ratchet up this week with a home game against Presbyterian (4 p.m., SEC Network Plus) Tuesday while SEC play begins this weekend.

The Gamecocks take on SEC East rival Georgia in a three-game series starting Friday night at 6 p.m.
