The Gamecocks are coming off a bye and sitting in the majority of every major news outlet’s bowl projections entering the season half of the season.

And one of the more frequent projections has South Carolina playing in a familiar bowl.

ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura, CBS Sports and more outlets all have South Carolina playing two days after Christmas in the Birmingham Bowl. The opponent, though, fluctuates.

The Gamecocks, if they play in Birmingham, will play a Group of 5 school out of the pool. That spot is typically reserved for a quality Group of 5 team. South Carolina last played in the Birmingham Bowl in 2016 where it suffered an overtime loss to South Florida.

ESPN’s Mark Schlabach and the Action Network’s Brett McMurphy have the Gamecocks heading to the Liberty Bowl for the first time since the mid-2000s and playing a resurgent Kansas program under Lance Leipold.
