Will Tippett blast gives South Carolina double-header split

Will Tippett’s two-run blast in the top of the eighth gave the University of South Carolina baseball team a 5-4 win over Kentucky in game two of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon (April 26) at Kentucky Proud Park. The Wildcats defeated the Gamecocks, 7-3, in game one.

In game one, Kentucky took a 2-0 lead after one inning on Carson Hansen’s two-run home run to left. Carolina came back to tie the game in the second with an RBI double from Beau Hollins and a run-scoring single from Gavin Braland. Kentucky scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-2 lead.
Carolina scored a run in the eighth as Braland came home on a double play ball, but Kentucky scored two in the eighth to add insurance.
Braland and Henry Kaczmar had two hits apiece to lead Carolina’s offense. The loss went to Brandon Stone, who allowed four earned runs on seven hits.
The Gamecocks started game two with a run in the first on Kennedy Jones’ RBI single. Kentucky answered with a run in the first and two in the second, but Carolina tied it at three on Nathan Hall’s two-run double that scored Evan Stone and Kaczmar.

Kentucky took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a squeeze bunt. Carolina took the lead in the eighth as Tippett connected on a two-run home run over the bullpen in left field.
Ashton Crowther picked up the win in relief, striking out four in 2.2 innings while not allowing a hit. Jake McCoy had seven strikeouts in 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs with one walk. Caleb Jones struck out a batter in 1.2 innings of relief.
Kaczmar had three hits and two runs scored in the win. Hall, Jones and Dalton Mashore had two hits apiece.
POSTGAME NOTES
- Tippett now has 11 home runs in his Carolina career and his third multi-run home run.
- Crowther has allowed just one run since March 22.
- Ethan Petry did not play game two after leaving game one with an injury.
- The Gamecocks outhit Kentucky 12-5 in game two.
