Xavier Legette ready to put it all together after finishing strong last season
The talent had always been there for Xavier Legette. But in years past with crowded wide receiver rooms, he never had a real chance to show what he could do.
That was until last year’s Gator Bowl when he got his opportunity to do good things. After only having 11 catches all year, Legette caught seven passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
“I’m just doing things that everybody thinks I can’t do,” Legette said. “That’s what I say, man.”

And now heading into his final year, he has a chance to put it all together.
“It’s going to be more of that this year,” Legette said. “As long as I can get the ball in my hand, man, I’ll make good things happen with it.”
A big part of Legette’s confidence comes from the work he put in during the offseason. Earlier this summer, he went out to Arizona to train with former Gamecock Deebo Samuel. The two could be seen on social media running nearly 19 miles per hour on a treadmill.
“We spent a lot of time out there together. I was there with him for about a week and a half,” Legette said. “We were training real hard and he showed me the ropes. And I’m feeling comfortable with doing everything that’s going to happen this year.”

Much like Samuel, Legette has a need for speed. In fact, their play styles are very similar.
Last October, Legette became the first Gamecock to have a kickoff return touchdown since Samuel in 2018. It was a 100-yard return to the house on the first play of the night against Texas A&M, a play that got his season going and ultimately led to a win over the Aggies.

Now with some help and training from an All-Pro player, Legette believes he can repeat that success and much more this year.
“You can start the momentum, man. If you bust out with a kick return and put six points on the board and when the defense goes back out there, they hyped up. So I feel like it just helps bring momentum to the game and puts us on a high level to win the game,” Legette said.
