The Tennessee baseball team reeled in a weekly honor from the Southeastern conference as hurler Andrew Lindsey was tabbed conference Pitcher of the Week for his outing at South Carolina in game one of the regular season finale series.

The No. 1 starter came within two outs of a complete-game shutout against the Gamecocks, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts and n walks over 103 pitches. Lindsey retired his final 17 batters and tossed five 1-2-3 innings along the way. The righty faced the minimum in seven frames and allowed just one hit over the minimum during the outing.

“I think it’s a different look with almost every pitch he throws. There’s not a lot of similarities even if you’re going to go the same type of pitch,” Tennessee coach Tony Vitello said on Lindsey’s performance. “He’s one of those guys where it’s not the same type of look. He was after the strike zone and he had some defense behind him a little bit.

“The whole thing worked out to be in our benefit. The offense did a good job. It ain’t easy sitting around the hotel and doing nothing. Our guys have had some crazy scheduling stuff since the start of the year. I thought they handled it really well. They came out loose but focused. The fact that I think he was able to pitch with the lead was a benefit as well.”

Lindsey moved into a starting role on March 31 at LSU, where he allowed one run on five hits across 4.2 innings pitched. He came into his own against Vanderbilt on April 21, allowing three runs over 6.2 innings pitched in a game where the Vols came back to win.

Since the Vanderbilt start, Lindsey has allowed a combined 10 runs over 31.1 innings pitched.

The honor marks the first SEC weekly award of Lindsey’s career, and the third time a Vols’ pitcher has won SEC Pitcher of the Week recognition this season. Drew Beam  was named SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week on May 1 and Chase Burns was tabbed SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week on April 24.

The New Johnsonville, Tenn. native pitched at Charlotte as a freshman in 201 before taking the 2022 season off. Following a stellar Appalachian League campaign in the summer of 2022, Lindsey made his way to Tennessee where he started off in the bullen for his first 12 appearances.

Lindsey and the rest of the Tennessee Volunteers begin play in the 2023 SEC Tournament as the seventh seed on Tuesday against No. 10 Texas A&M at approximately 1:30 pm ET. The hurler currently boasts a 2-2 record with a 2.54 ERA.
