Five Tennessee pitchers etched their names in the Volunteer record books Friday night during the 12-0 win over St. Bonaventure as they became the fourth group to ever combine for a no-hitter in program history. The Vols have now thrown nine no-hitters in program history, five individually and four combined.

Liam Doyle started the ballgame and dominated over 5.2 innings with 13 strikeouts. He retired as 17-straight before exiting the ballgame with a two-out walk in then sixth inning. The southpaw came up one strikeout shy of a career-high and now has 47 punchouts in the season.

Tanner Franklin came on to finish the sixth inning and needed only eight pitches to do so. Brandon Arvidson tossed a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts over 19 pitches. Brayden May, who was making his first-career appearance, pitched a scoreless eighth on 21 pitches. Michael Sharman pitched the clean ninth inning on 10 pitches.

Tennessee previously accomplished the feat on three separate occasions.

The Vols defeated College of Charleston 14-0 on Feb. 21, 2000 when Kurt Scott, Brad Love, Logan Brummitt, Marlyn Tisdale and Brandon Crowe combined to issue no hits.

Tennessee blanked Tusculum College 13-0 on Feb. 22, 1984 when David Curl, Jeff Owen, Jeff Glover, Steve Searcy and Rich DeLucia accomplished the feat.

UT first combined for a no-hitter on March 16, 1976 when the Vols shutout Slippery Rock 8-0. Rick Honeycutt and Jim Gaylor combined to toss the scoreless five innings.

Tennessee has also thrown five individual no-hitters in program history with the latest coming in 2002. UT’s program no-hitter count is now at nine total with five individual efforts and four combined no-no’s.

UT continues its series with the Bonnies on Saturday evening for Game 2 from Lindsey Nelson Stadium. First pitch is slated for 6 o’clock ET.
