Tennessee and Clemson are down to just one day until the two top-10 programs square off in the Capital One Orange Bowl as kickoff is slated for 8 o’clock eastern time. The Vols are seeking their first 11-win season since the 2001 campaign.

On Thursday, both head coaches took part in a joint press conference at the La Meridian. Josh Heupel and Dabo Swinney discussed the importance of this week of preparations and the excitement level of each team heading into the matchup.

Tennessee offense in a ‘league of its own’

That’s what Clemson defensive coordinator Wes Goodwin said Wednesday morning when asked who this offense compares to that’s been on the Tigers’ schedule this past season.

“Our guys have been practicing really hard. I think that first practice after the break, we smoked ’em pretty good,” Goodwin said when asked how to prepare for Tennessee’s tempo. “We are trying to create an unrealistic stress and trying to make things easier once it gets to game day. It’s obviously going to be a huge, huge challenge. There’s nobody better at tempo than Tennessee.

“There’s no celebration after the play – you’ve got to look over and get the call, get lined up and let’s go again. It will be a huge, huge challenge come Friday night.”

The Vols were one of the fastest offenses in the country this past season after running just shy of three plays per minute last year in 2021. Tennessee led the country with 538.3 yards of total offense per game and is the nation’s top-scoring team at 47.3 points an outing.

Cade Klubnik on Tennessee’s radar

Dabo Swinney made the move two series into the ACC Championship, replacing DJ Uiagalelei, where Klubnik sparked the 39-10 win over North Carolina on Championship Saturday. The freshman led all Tiger scoring drives and finished the outing completing 20-of-24 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown.

“I thought he did a tremendous job,” Banks said of Klubnik’s play against North Carolina. “You can see why they played him and why they have so much confidence in him. They do a great job with their RPO concepts. They have a strong run game. They do a great job that way. The quarterback is extremely athletic. I think he has a strong arm. He’s obviously young. He doesn’t have a big body of work, but the reps you have seen. You understand the future is bright for him. It’s going to be a great challenge.”
