Fast-Break: Tennessee advances with a 77-62 win over Wofford

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Second seeded Tennessee advanced to the round of 32 with a 77-62 win over Wofford to open NCAA Tournament play.

Senior Chaz Lanier got comfortable early and saw a big rim leading the Vols with 29 points. Lanier was 11 of  22 from the floor and he was 6-13 from beyond the three point line. Lanier’s six three’s tied Tennessee’s NCAA Tournament single-game record for made triples. Only Dalton Knecht (37) and Ernie Grunfeld (36) scored more than Lanier in an NCAA Tournament game. Knecht made six threes and scored 37 in the Elite Eight loss to Purdue last March.

Senior point guard Zakai Zeigler add 12 points and 12 assists. Zeigler’s 12 assists moved him to the top of Tennessee all time assist leader passing Johnny Darden and breaking a 47 year old school record. . 

Jahmai Mashack added nine points and seven rebounds, Jordan Gainey scored seven points, had four rebounds and two assists and Felix Okpara scored seven points and had five boards.

As a team, Tennessee shot 48% from the floor. Defensively the Vols had 3 blocks and 9 steals.

Tennessee improved to 6-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament under Rick Barnes, during its current program-record run of seven straight tournament appearances. The win was Barnes’ 10th NCAA tournament win as the Vols head coach and it was Tennessee’s 28 win of the season which is the second most win a Tennessee team has had under Barnes. Only two teams in school history (2018-2019 and 2007-2008) have more wins in a season than this current Tennessee squad.
