Fast-Break: Tennessee onto the semifinals after 83-72 win over Texas

NASHVILLE — Tennessee advanced to the SEC Tournament semifinals to take on Auburn thanks to an 83-72 win over Texas. A win jumpstarted by Chaz Lanier and finished off by senior point guard Zakai Zeigler.
Lanier had 19 points in the first half on 8 of 11 shooting. In the second half, the Nashville native had 4 points on 1 of 4 from the field. Zeigler was scoreless in the first half playing only 9 minutes due to two fouls. In the second half, Zeigler opened with 4 straight points and 19 in the final 20 minutes of 6 of 7 shooting. He also had six assists setting the single season school record for assists and he’s closing in on the career record.
Jahmai Mashack had 13 points to go with 7 rebounds and 4 assists and the senior defensive stalwart was a thorn in freshman Tre Johnson’s side all day. Texas’ leading scored on the season had 11 points, but was only 3 of 8 from the field as Mashack and the Vols limited his touches and never gave him a clean look at the rim.
Tennessee finished shooting 50% from the field. They out rebounded the Longhorns by 5 which included 15 offensive rebounds that they turned into 18 second chance points.

Tennessee now gets another look at No. 1 Auburn, after the top-ranked Tigers beat Ole Miss 62-57 to advance to Saturday’s semifinal round.
The Vols lost 53-51 at Auburn on January 25, giving up a 51-47 lead with 2:07 left in the game.
Zeigler had 14 points, six rebounds and five assists and Lanier scored 10 in the loss. Johni Broome returned from an ankle injury that sidelined him the previous three games and made his presence felt, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in 33 minutes.
Miles Kelly made the go-ahead 3-pointer from the corner off a Broome drive and pass and Zeigler missed a corner three with eight seconds left.
