Tennessee added its fifth player from the transfer portal Sunday evening as former Bowling Green utility Garrett Wright committed and signed with the Volunteers.

Wright is considered a well-rounded baseball player, excelling both in the field and at the plate. The sophomore was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year this past spring and was also appointed to the ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region First-Team.

A season ago, the utility player was named a Second-Team Freshman All-American by Perfect Game and the MAC Freshman of the Year. In two seasons, Wright has been named First-Team All-MAC catcher and to the All-Defensive Team for the conference. He holds the Bowling Green program records for doubles (20) in 2025 and the all-time hit by pitch mark with 49 in two seasons.

As a sophomore, Wright reached base safely in 52 of the 54 games played. He was the lone player in the conference to tally a batting average north of .400, hitting .406 on the season, which ranked fifth in program history. He was also the only player in the league to registered an on-base percentage higher than .500.

Wright’s 60 runs scored in 2025 ranked ninth in program history and his 82 hits are good enough for fifth all-time for Bowling Green. His eight home runs and 48 RBI were second on the team and his 134 bases were 10th-most for the program.

The versatile defender played five different positions this past spring, logging a .991 fielding percentage. Wright caught in 36 games and logged action in the outfield for 22 contests – left field (13), centerfield (4) and right field (5).

Wright is not draft eligible and has two years of colligate eligibility remaining. Wright will play summer ball in the Cape Cod League.

Baseball Transfer Portal

The 2025 non-graduate transfer portal opened on June 2 and will remain open until July 1. Players must have their name entered in the transfer portal by July 1 if they want to move on, but new destinations do not have to be made by that time.

The Vols have benefited greatly from the transfer portal in recent cycles, reeling in the likes of Chase Dollander (2022), Griffin Merritt (2023), Maui Ahuna (2023), Zane Denton (2023), Billy Amick (2024), Cannon Peebles (2024), AJ Causey (2024), Chris Stamos (2024), Liam Doyle (2025), Andrew Fischer (2025) and Gavin Kilen (2025).

So far, Tennessee has five portal additions in right-handed pitchers Clay Edmondson (UNC Asheville), Mason Estrada (MIT), Bo Rhudy (Kennesaw State), Brady Frederick (ETSU) and utility Garrett Wright (Bowling Green). Tennessee has also added junior college players such as RHP Matt Barr (SUNY Niagara) and Tyler Myatt (Walters State) and picked up catcher Trent Grindlinger as a late add to the 2025 class in recent weeks.

Tennessee has lost eight players to the transfer portal so far: INF Jack Jones, INF Robinson Martin, LHP Bryson Thacker, OF Colby Backus, LHP Thomas Crabtree, RHP Austin Hunley, LHP/OF Brayden Sharp and LHP Ryler Smart.
